Four more bleedin' years of it! My heart sank at the realisation, when I read that Channel 4 had secured the right for Big Brother for another four years, that we were in for another four years of it. Does anyone else get really turned off by the craze of reality TV, BB being the arch-example? Please let me know if you do, or in fact if you love it then tell me why. Then I can pick your argument to bits:-) (joking, but I would try, and if I couldn't then I'd refer you to SR who wins all arguments, except with himself)
Now some reality TV, like some Docusoaps etc. have value. What I detest is the staged, put a bunch of people in a house, or a jungle, or an island, or... and let's all watch them on TV in some fetishly voyeuristic and, let's say it, disturbing manner as we avidly devour their micro-lives, their idiosyncracies, issues, lab-induced hysterias and skin. It's times like this that I'm glad that the original 'omnipresent' Big Brother doesn't actually control a third of the world and that it's not 1984 and we can turn the TV off.
I just think that some reality TV doesn't do people justice, but debases them while we all watch. And apart from that it bores me, but then that's subjective (unlike the rest of this post, of course).
So anyway... I have started my new job and am enjoying it so far. First week is nearly over. It's a new challenge in familiar territory of family homelessness. Going good, but I'll update in more details soon. I feel a bit at the moment like it should be the new year... strange...
