So last night I was at a play 'Timon of Athens', a remake of the partially Shakespeare-authored and lesser spotted play. This was produced and staged by Cardboard Citizens, a company made up of homeless and ex-homeless prople and asylum-seekers. I was well-impressed: they brought Shakespeare close to modern life, the acting was excellent and the play, whilst some parts allmost dragged, the pace or voice changed and I was held by it throughout. The themes of friendship, money, stature and kudos all made me think about my own experience both in my life and with those I work - it was quite provocative. A departure for me from the traditional play I am used to, but overall a welcome one.
I am starting nightshifts again (may this necessity end soon!) but on Saturday night I'm off with Steve and Craig to a Gala poetry evening, again part of the Beflast Festival at Queen's. Unfortunately Seamus Heaney won't be there as planned (he suffered a minor stroke), but it still promises to be a great line-up. Poets reading their own poetry is one of my favourite things...
